A viable alternative vision
Local group “Save The Honest Miller” was set up to help secure the future of The Honest Miller public house at Brook, near Ashford, and protect the green space surrounding the pub for the long term. The group has launched a viable alternative to plans put forward by CPG.
The group, which now represents over 150 local households, has proposed a thriving, local community-led pub which would protect and enhance the green space in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Compelling business plan
So, rather than building houses in order to reopen the pub, the group has created a compelling business plan and alternative vision for an exciting, community-led pub. A destination for truly outstanding locally sourced food and drink, innovative menus with pop-up guest chefs local to the region, a kitchen garden providing sustainable, seasonal produce. And all whilst remaining true to its rural roots as a fantastic and welcoming pub for locals.

Commitment to the community
The plan would use the additional buildings and land for the benefit of the community. Further ideas include a village shop in the Coach House, large-scale community events on the green space (such as bonfire nights and festivals), and a monthly farmers’ market.
There would be prescription and online delivery drop-off points, community groups and coffee mornings. Other plans would include a remote working hub, educational events for local schools and families, as well as retaining the profitable glamping facilities for which the land already has planning permission.
Resilience of community-led enterprise
The Group’s Business Plan allows for the substantial investment needed to return the pub buildings to their former glory, without the need to build houses.
Community pubs have shown themselves to be more resilient than other pub businesses, due to the degree of community buy-in and ability to run the business with a more nuanced commercial approach.
