A day to remember
Ride and Stride is the fund raising section of The Friends of Kent Churches. Participants gain sponsorship from family and friends, work colleagues, school mates, fellow club members, congregations etc and set out on their own routes to visit churches and chapels open on the day. Great exercise, interesting people, beautiful old buildings and memorable moments all accompany the day out.
The initiative started in Suffolk 40 years ago and Kent is a leading light in this brilliant charity, intent on preserving our magnificent, historical landmarks across the county.
Herne Bay to Reculver
My merry group of 13 met at St Bartholomew’s, Herne Bay, and cycled on to Reculver. A glorious ride down the Saxon Way took us back into Herne Bay for seafront coffee and cycle repairs and some frustrations as churches promising to open were firmly closed. No worry: on a sunny day with cheerful folk we cycled on adding churches to our list and meeting generous helpers in the churches, offers of refreshment, hearty stories and genuine support.
In Whitstable, we found many churches and chapels open and pleased to see us. Fine Kentish ale, swimming in the sea, visits to a few of Whitstable’s quaint old shops and a search for oysters rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable day … and hopefully a few well earned £££s for the Ride & Stride cause.
