Sad news from Stodmarsh, that a number of dead birds have been spotted, most likely killed by Avian flu which has been rampant in England all year.
Poultry keepers in Kent ought to be aware that all birds should be kept in pens during these months of the epidemic. Even back garden chickens can get infected if they are free ranging among wild birds.
Did flu kill the birds at Stodmarsh?
Free-range hens must stay indoors!
Shoppers who buy free range eggs for ethical reasons should realise that, sadly, during this time of epidemic, even free range poultry farms have been told by DEFRA that all chickens must be kept indoors in East Anglia and Essex.
This does not mean that such farms will revert to battery cage conditions. Presumably the ‘free range’ farms already have larger barns to accommodate their flocks. The EU authorities have already been asked to relax the description of ‘free-range’ to accommodate this emergency and allow the free-range farms to continue to use the label even while their flocks are actually inside.
Having experienced COVID lockdown ourselves, pity the poor chickens now being confined indoors for months!
